Ms. Anhar Kochneva, a citizen of Ukraine, was abducted in October 2012 by the group identifying itself as the fighters of the Free Syrian Army in El Quseir (Homs Province, Syria).
While being a private civil person, she worked as an interpreter mostly for Russian-speaking mass-media visiting Syria.
At this point the abductors` group holds her as a hostage and threatens her with physical elimination if their demands are not completed.
On December 7 Lebanon newspaper “The Daily Star” issued an article based on the Ms. Anhar Kochneva`s letter, which was released by her kidnappers under pressure from Syrian opposition figures who have ties with the kidnappers.
In the letter Ms. Anhar Kochneva asks to intensify efforts to meet her kidnappers’ conditions and step up efforts to free her due to her health condition.
According to another piece of information, released in web-media, the kidnappers, represented by Abu Zhandal and Farid Abu Hussein, threaten to kill her on December 13, if their financial demands are not satisfied.
Ukraine decisively declares that this kind of actions taken to achieve political goals are not compatible with fundamental principles of democracy and international law and have to receive a proper assessment by the international community.
We ask our partners to carry out all necessary measures to provide any possible assistance to guarantee the security and release of the Ukrainian national and condemn acts of violence like this targeted at civilian persons.
In this respect the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has issued the following statement:
Ukraine is once again voicing its deep concern regarding situation around Ms. Anhar Kochneva who is being illegally kept on the territory of Syria by a group identifying itself as a unit of the Free Syrian Army.
Ukraine is taking all the necessary measures in order to free the abducted Ukrainian national both at the level of state, including interaction with its international partners, and with participation of civil and religious organizations.
