On 26 March 2014, the meeting named “New Horizons in Ukraine – EU Relations: Signing of the Political Part of the Association Agreement” was held in Ankara’s Foundation of Turkish Economic Policy Researches (TEPAV). A number of representatives of Turkish State Organs, NGO and Mass Media as well as Heads of foreign Diplomatic Missions of European countries took part in the meeting. Ambassadors of Ukraine, Poland, Germany and the EU made their speeches.
The participants of the event concentrated their attention at the outstanding importance of the signing on 21 March 2014 of the political part of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU for the stable development of Ukraine and de-escalation of the Ukrainian-Russian conflict.
The Ambassador of Ukraine Dr. Sergiy Korsunsky emphasized that the Association Agreement is a conscious choice of civilization made by Ukraine that comes back to Europe. The Agreement was also characterized as a sign of solidarity of the unified Europe with the Ukrainian people who paid with blood for their right of a worthy life.
All the participants of the meeting were united in their condemnation of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and in their non-recognition of Russia’s annexation of the Crimea. Speakers underlined that the US and the EU must more actively participate in the protection of Ukraine from the Russian threat and carry out the security guarantees given to Ukraine in accordance with the Budapest Memorandum.
Special attention was paid to the issues of energy security of the European and Black Sea regions. The Ukrainian Side criticized the South Stream project, which, if realized, would only increase the dependence of the EU from Russia. At the same time, the Ukrainian Ambassador proved the economic advantages of the modernization of Ukraine’s gas transport system for supplying energy to Europe.
