On 17 July 2014, the civil passenger aircraft Boeing-777 of Malaysia Airlines which was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur (flight MAS-17) at an altitude of 10,100 meters was shot down over the territory of Ukraine. All the 280 passengers and 15 crew members of the aircraft died.
President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has immediately initiated establishing of a respective State Commission with participation of representatives of ICAO and other international organizations in order to properly investigate this terrorist act.
According to the information available at this time, the Malaysian airliner disappeared from the radars of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Air Traffic Control Centre at about 16:20 on 17 July 2014 and crashed not far from the Ukrainian-Russian border, approximately 3 km north of Grabove village of Shakhtarsk district of Donetsk region of Ukraine.
The accident site is located on the territory controlled by the terrorist groupings supported by the Russian Federation. The Government of Ukraine is taking all the necessary measures to reach an agreement with the illegal armed groupings regarding full access to the accident site in order to perform necessary procedures of identification and repatriation of the bodies of the victims to their Motherlands.
The Operational Headquarters was created in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine which is working round-the-clock in order to process requests of the relatives of the victims and to coordinate respective cooperation with Foreign Diplomatic Missions in Ukraine. Similar Operational Headquarters were created at the Embassies of Ukraine in Malaysia and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
Already at this stage of investigation the Ukrainian Side has every reason to believe that the Malaysian airliner was shot down by an air defence missile system.
It is also important to notice that during the whole period of the anti-terrorist operation in Ukraine the Ukrainian Armed Forces never fired a single guided air defence missile. There were no Ukrainian fighters in the airspace at the time of the plane crash either.
It should be also pointed out that on 14 and 16 July 2014, Ukrainian military aircraft AN-26 and SU-25 respectively were shot down by fire from the territory of the Russian Federation.
Within hours from the terrorist act the Security Service of Ukraine obtained evidence that the airliner was shot down by pro-Russian terrorists with Russian weapon. This tragedy once again proved that the destabilization of the Donbas area of Ukraine carried out by the Kremlin is not based on political background but on a state terrorism that presents a threat to the international stability and security.
The Embassy of Ukraine in the Republic of Turkey strongly condemns this barbaric act perpetrated by Russia sponsored terrorists, which has become a great tragedy both for Ukraine and the whole world, and expresses its deepest and most sincere condolences to families and friends of the innocent victims.
