President Petro Poroshenko is convinced that Ukraine and Turkey have significant prospects for the development of bilateral cooperation, as evidenced by today's talks and meetings of the High-Level Strategic Council.
"Today, we had very warm, friendly talks - almost two hours face-to-face, and then another two hours in the format of the organization. This shows how wide the agenda of our bilateral cooperation and coordination of our actions on the international scene is," the Head of State said during the joint press conference with President of the Turkish Republic Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
"I had a wonderful opportunity to once again make sure that in the person of President Erdoğan we have a reliable, kind friend and partner for Ukraine," Petro Poroshenko added.
The Head of State called the seventh meeting of the High-Level Strategic Council extremely productive.
"Negotiations have shown a high level of mutual understanding and effective overcoming of any obstacles that we are removing today in the economic, political, humanitarian and social spheres of relations between our states," he stated.
In particular, according to Petro Poroshenko, many years of fruitful cooperation with the Turkish Agency for Cooperation and Coordination have received a new legal framework after the signing of the Agreement on the development of cooperation. "And we will be very grateful if this cooperation applies to the Ukrainian Donbas, including with regard to infrastructure development," he said.
The President also noted the progress achieved by the two countries in the transport sector, especially in the liberalization of bilateral freight transportation. "This is a step towards the proper use of the transit opportunities of Ukraine and Turkey. These transit opportunities connect Europe with the Middle East, Central Asia. We definitely have a firm intention to develop this cooperation," the Head of State emphasized.
The President also noted effective cooperation in the military-technical sphere.
Particular attention was paid by Petro Poroshenko to the development of cooperation in the cultural sphere. He thanked that the film “Donbas” by Serhiy Loznytsia was awarded at the Boğaziçi Film Festival in Istanbul. "It is nice that the development of cultural and humanitarian exchange also includes the feature film "Cyborgs", which was shown on the big screen in Turkey. I think that it also shows significant results in the field of cultural cooperation," the Head of State said.
The President also announced tomorrow's visit to the defense companies, the opening of a consulate in Antalya, which will improve the consular service for Ukrainian citizens who have come for a vacation or permanently reside in Turkey.
"The prospects of our cooperation are extremely large. We must protect the people and I am sure that the next task in the direction of protection is the completion of the bilateral agreement on social protection. We set these tasks today," Petro Poroshenko said.
"These prospects are clear both for Ankara and for Kyiv. They are mutually beneficial. I can say with pleasure that our cooperation with President Erdoğan, our cooperation with Turkey has a very important strategic character," he added.
The Head of State also said today he had meetings not only with the leadership of the neighboring country, but also with one of the key partners of Ukraine in the foreign arena.
President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in turn, expressed satisfaction with the visit of the President of Ukraine.
"This year we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with Ukraine. The Ottoman Empire became one of the first states, which in 1918 recognized the young state - the Ukrainian People's Republic. And today we are developing our relations with the vision of that period," he reminded.
Recep Tayyip Erdoğan noted that after the creation of the Strategic Council of the High Level, the bilateral relations between Ukraine and Turkey have reached the level of strategic partnership.
"Thanks to this, we are strengthening our relations each year and will continue to strengthen them," he convinced.
Among the achievements of the recent years, President Erdoğan called the opportunity for the citizens of the two countries to carry out mutual trips with ID-cards. "During 2018, the number of Ukrainian citizens who visited our country has already exceeded 1 million people," he said.
"Our cooperation in the military-industrial complex is being intensified and developed each year. Our companies are ready to put their signatures under joint projects," the President of Turkey added.
"Such meetings provide an opportunity to outline responsibilities to one another. I and my colleague, President Poroshenko, have just signed the Joint Statement on the results of our joint meeting. This document will be our "roadmap" for the next meeting, which will be held in Kyiv," Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said.
He also noted that Turkey is following the reform process in Ukraine and expressed conviction that "Ukraine's success in this process will bring benefits not only for Ukraine but also for all the countries in the region".
