On February 3, Ukraine and Turkey celebrated the 20thanniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Since the declaration of independence of Ukraine in 1991, the Ukrainian-Turkish relations have developed rapidly. In particular, the parties are engaged into an active political dialogue and enjoy constructive cooperation in the framework of international and regional organizations.
Intense political partnership allows to pursue a mutually beneficial economic policy. At this stage, cooperation between Ukraine and Turkey in the fields of trade, economy and energy are among priorities and key elements of strategic partnership between the two states.
When Ukraine and Turkey established diplomatic relations in 1992, bilateral trade volume amounted to $ 120 million. In 1995, it surpassed $ 1 billion and reached $5,2 billion in 2011.
In his letter to Prime Minister of Turkey Recep TayyipErdoğanon the occasion of the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarove said that “nowadays cooperation between Ukraine and Turkey is intensive and multi-dimensional and develops actively”.
In the course of the official visit of President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych to Turkey on December 22, 2011 the parties held the first meeting of the High Level Strategic Council under the co-chairmanship of the said leaders of the two states.
Writing to his Turkish colleague on the occasion of the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Kosryantyn Gryshchenko, in particular, noted that “long-term historical ties and a strong tradition of mutually beneficial partnership between the Ukrainian and Turkish nations, joint aspirations for peace, stability and prosperity in the Black Sea and Caucasus, vast potential for further cooperation in the strategic fields reassure that relations between the two states will continue to strengthen in the future”.
