In recent days the situation in Ukraine is going from bad to worse. Yesterday it reaches the point when President of the Russian Federation has got an authority to invade our beloved homeland - Ukraine. It would be an act of barbarism unimaginable in 21st century and between nations connected by millions of family, cultural, religious, business ties. Every day Moscovites are passing by the monument of Kiev Prince Yuriy Dolgorukiy on Tverskaya Street. Yuriy Dologorukiy was a founder of Moscow in the beginning of 12 century. At that time Kiev was already 600 years old.
No Russian or Russian-speaking population interests are in danger in Ukraine. No central authority in Kiev ever violated rights of the Ukrainian citizens to speak the language they want, or to adhere the religion they choose. Among most loyal citizens of Ukraine there are Crimean Tatars who were deprived of their homes by Stalin regime in Moscow and deported 70 years ago. Hundreds of thousands Crimean Tatars died. Today again their right to choose where to live or to live at all might be violated through direct military intervention.
This year is special. 360 years ago in Pereyaslivska Rada Ukraine has signed an agreement with Russian Czar to join the Russian Empire and to form a union of two brotherly nations. Very soon this agreement was violated and since then Ukrainians have fought to restore independence. They did it in 1991 and Ukraine was recognized by all countries around the world in the existing borders, Russia included.
100 years ago the First World War started. Russian Empire participated in that war. Historians can better tell you what result for the Empire and for the world that war brought.
Violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine will bring dare consequences for the international community. Ukraine is the first country in the history of mankind which gave up nuclear weapons voluntarily. In exchange Ukraine was provided with international guarantees of its sovereignty by a number of nuclear powers, Russia included. If those obligations are violated, it will create a dangerous precedent and no other country in the world will ever trust again the ability of international community to maintain international peace and abandon plans to obtain nuclear weapons. We would like to appeal to the United States, Great Britain, France, Canada, the European Union and China to help us to stop this movement to war. We urge the Government of Turkey to join international efforts in this regard taking into account strategic relations that were established between our countries and grave danger to lives of the Crimean Tatars the military conflict could bring.
The central Government in Ukraine was brought to power by the people of Ukraine who wanted to live in the society ruled by transparent and non-corrupt Government, and not by terrorists and guerillas trained abroad as some “experts” say. Almost 100 people lost their lives in this battle and among them those who lived in Eastern, Western and Southern part of Ukraine, men and women, from 17 to 62 years old. They were brutally killed in cold blood and those responsible are now hiding beyond our borders. Ukrainians on Maidan fought for their European future, and they deserve it.
We urge the Ukrainian and Crimean Tatars communities around the globe to support our fight for peace and to avoid the bloodshed. There is still a possibility to stop the escalation and return relations to normality. Every voice, every pray, every effort will be helpful. Ukrainians is a peaceful and tolerant nation. We do not want this war.
